Sudoku Rules & How to Play
The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each row, column, and 3×3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9.
The Three Basic Rules
- Rows: Every row must contain the numbers from 1 to 9, without repetitions.
- Columns: Every column must contain the numbers from 1 to 9, without repetitions.
- Boxes: Every 3×3 box must contain the numbers from 1 to 9, without repetitions.
Getting Started (How to Play)
1. Scan rows and columns
Look for rows or columns where a digit is almost complete. For example, if a row has 8 numbers filled in, the 9th number is the only one missing from 1-9. Use this to find the remaining cell.
2. Check the 3x3 box
Within each 3x3 box, identify which digits are missing. Cross-reference these missing digits with the rows and columns intersecting the empty cells in that box.
3. Use pencil marks
When you aren't sure which number goes in a cell, you can write small "pencil marks" (candidate digits) in the corners. This helps you track possibilities and spot advanced patterns later.
4. Eliminate and place
By constantly scanning the board and using the process of elimination, you will eventually find cells where only one specific digit can fit. Place it, and repeat the process!
